INCREASING YOUR INCOME WITH AFFILIATE PROGRAMS
http://www.writeedge.com/images/spacer.gif
If you're not accepting banner ads and joining affiliate programs, then your Web site probably is not earning as much   money as it could be. An increasing number of Web site owners are converting small portions of their Web space to   cash through the use of affiliate banner ads and strategically placed text links.
"Affiliate marketing is beginning to form the basis of most sites’ marketing and advertising campaigns," says    Gordon Hoffstein, president and CEO of Be Free, Inc. The company manages affiliate programs for online    merchants, currently boasting more than 2.4 million affiliates in its sales channels. Hoffstein believes that     affiliate program advertising will grow even more as site owners begin to realize its benefits and weed   out less effective banner ads.

While many site owners are reluctant to send visitors to other sites, Ryan Adams, whosesite ClickQuick.com evaluates affiliate programs, said the advantages of well-implementedaffiliate programs outweigh this concern.   Topping his list is added value to the Web site’s
visitors. Affiliate programs allow Web sites "to reach out and provide value to their visitors
that they might not otherwise be able to. For example, a site about cars might want to be able
to offer their visitors a way to shop for insurance easily and quickly." And the best part? "The owner
of the car site can do what he or she does best: create content about cars, and attract
visitors interested in cars," Adams says.

Affiliate programs provide benefits to Webmasters, advertisers, and visitors alike by
offering visitors easy access to a more diversified product or service line without the
expense of additional warehousing or site development on the part of the Web
site owner. For advertisers, it’s a no-risk proposition: their products or services are
exposed to the site’s visitors, but the advertising costs nothing if the product doesn’t sell.
Another benefit, according to Hoffstein, is that "merchants are more efficiently able to
attract and retain customers because they are placing their links in-context to where

their potential customers will go on the Web." And visitors benefit by learning about
new Web sites that they might not have found on their own -- and by having the option
to purchase a product or service instantly.

Potential income from affiliate programs can vary from nothing to several thousand
dollars a month. A ClickQuick survey found that only 8% of the respondents made
more than $500 per month and most respondents were making between $50 and $300
per month. However, the One and Only Network's top affiliate for December 1999
made more than $12,000 in one month, proving that the potential is there, if you
can take advantage of the opportunities.

Affiliate Programs Explained

Unlike the old days of advertising when advertisers paid to place ads and
Webmasters were paid based on the number of times an ad was displayed,
affiliate programs only pay for results. What defines a result differs from
program to program: some programs, such as About.com, pay every time
someone clicks through and visits the site; others pay every time someone
registers for a free service; and still others, such as Amazon.com, pay only
when someone comes from your site and makes a purchase.
Some affiliate programs pay varying rates for registrations, click-throughs,
and purchases. There are also variations within programs: Amazon.com pays
15% if you link directly to a book that gets purchased and 5% of purchases if
you just link to the main page. Affiliate programs that pay commissions also

vary on how they pay. Some pay only if a sale is made on the initial visit, while
others encourage users to register with the site and pay the initial referrer a
commission on all subsequent sales.

Determining who came from what site and what they purchased is a daunting task,
especially when you consider that some sites have huge numbers of associates. For
instance, Amazon.com currently has more than 300,000 affiliates and this number
is growing. Merchants have solved this problem by assigning each affiliate a unique
ID and embedding this ID into the link placed on the affiliate site. If you’re an
Amazon.com affiliate and place a banner on your site, every time someone clicks through to
Amazon.com, the visit is tracked and if the customer buys something, you get credit.
Some companies turn the management of their affiliate programs over to third parties,
such as Be Free, Inc. LinkShare.com, and Commission Junction. These companies
track click-throughs, issue checks, and provide an easy way for affiliates to research
and sign up for hundreds of affiliate programs at one site. More importantly, from an
affiliate’s viewpoint, they require merchants to make deposits into escrow accounts
to cover affiliate program costs -- and they will post a notice telling current and
would-be affiliate members which merchants are out of cash and aren't paying affiliates.
Many affiliate programs pay out monthly after you've earned a certain amount. This minimum
varies from $25 to $50 per month. Other programs pay out quarterly and have minimums ranging
from $50 to $200. Watch for these terms to be explained upfront in your affiliate agreement
and find out whether you would be notified via email if payout terms change.

Finding and Choosing the Right Ones

Finding worthwhile affiliate programs can be difficult and time consuming. If you’re not
sure what’s available, the easiest way to find many different affiliate programs in one place
is by signing up with Commission Junction, Be Free, Inc., or LinkShare.com.
These companies manage hundreds of affiliate programs and allow you to sign up for
multiple programs by filling out a single form. If there's a particular company with which
you would like to affiliate, but it isn't listed with one of the affiliate managers, try the direct
approach. Most companies will list affiliate opportunities under the "About Us," "Affiliates,"
"Partnerships," or "Opportunities" sections of their Web site. You can also watch the banner
ads that scroll across your screen as you're surfing the net, because chances are if you see a
banner, the site has an affiliate program.

It's important to choose your affiliate programs wisely. Join only those programs that
you can believe in. Some things to consider when choosing an affiliate program:
Choose products and services that will appeal to your visitors. Never dilute
the appeal of your own site by offering affiliate products or services outside your
own audience demographic. "Carefully target the affiliate programs and their products
and services sold to the interests of your visitors," says Ryan Adams of ClickQuick.com.
"Even a top-notch, high-commission program will perform poorly if it is not targeted
towards the right audience." If you sell children's clothing online, consider affiliating
with an online toy store. If you sell office supplies, partner with an online provider
of business services. By targeting your advertising to your customers, you'll have
a higher click-through percentage than if you choose partners at random.

Choose Web sites with a good reputation.
No matter how limited or valuable your time may be, invest some time in thoroughly
investigating your potential affiliate partners. Never join an affiliate program that offers
ower quality service or products than your own -- otherwise, your own reputation will
suffer by association. You can find information about online companies
at RedHerring.Com and Internet.Com. You can find reviews of affiliate
    programs at ClickQuick.com and Refer-it.com.
Don't be lured by big, one-time payouts.
Some Webmasters, new to the affiliate game, will be lured by the large
payouts offered by many companies for free registration and will load their
advertising space with sponsors paying for registration. Signing up with companies
that pay several dollars per registered visitor could add up a lot faster than $0.02 per click.

However, many visitors won't take the time to complete the registration process
and other visitors will already be members, which means you get nothing even
if they click through to visit the site.

    Diversify to stabilize your income.
Choose partners with a variety of payout methods so that you can create a
stable base of income. For instance, if you choose only partners that pay commissions
based on sales, you could have an income that varies widely from month to month.
However, if you choose a mix of affiliate programs with some paying per click,
some for registration, and some for sales, you'll create a more stable income.
You might also want to consider when programs pay out and choose some
with monthly payouts and others with quarterly payouts.

    Read affiliate agreements carefully.
Some agreements will specify that you cannot display advertisements for similar
sites and some may specify that you use only banners and not text links. Unless
you comply with all terms in the affiliate agreement, you will likely find yourself
short-changed on payoffs. And you can potentially cut off other revenue
streams that could be more lucrative.

Choose affiliate programs that meet your navigation objectives.
While some affiliate programs specify exactly how banner and text links
must be created, others will allow you to open links in a separate browser
window -- allowing your customers to remain on your site at the same time
that you take advantage of your affiliate opportunities.

Choose products and services that don’t compete with what you offer.
Last but not least -- the obvious: if you're a small bookstore, don’t partner with
Amazon.com. Even if you think that customers will appreciate the opportunity to
find items that you do not stock, you’ll more likely discover that your customers
prefer the lower prices that a huge chain can offer -- on all the items.

Taking the Plunge

After you've chosen the affiliate partners with whom you'd like to associate, you'll need to fill
out an application and tell them about yourself and your Web site. Others will carefully review
your site for content, number of hits, and current affiliate programs. Acceptance criteria vary
widely. DirectLeads, for instance, requires that sites have 3,000 unique visitors per month, while

Furniture.com's affiliate agreement states that sites can be rejected if they discriminate on the basis
of race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age; promote illegal
activities; or contain little or no original content.
Some programs review sites immediately, while others take several weeks to give you
a decision. You should be notified via email either way and if you're accepted, you'll be
sent your affiliate ID and told where you can find the html code you'll need in order to
place the appropriate banners or text links on your site. If you are
not accepted, you may be told why your site was not accepted and given the option
of reapplying when you meet their criteria.

Following the Rules

It's important to follow the rules when you participate in affiliate programs or you'll
find your membership terminated or suspended. Each affiliate agreement is slightly
different, but many contain directions concerning the following:

Placement of Ads: Your agreement will likely specify the size, style, and
number of ads that you can place per page, and identify whether you can
use ads in newsletters or exclusively on your Web site. Most request ads
to be located in a "prominent place" on the site, but a few will be
     very specific about ad placement.

Site Content: Site content provisions vary widely. Some simply specify that
you will not post adult content on your site and others require that your site has
valid content concerning a particular topic -- rather than serving primarily
as a portal site with a collection of links.
Exclusivity: Some agreements require that you not accept advertisements
    from similar sites.
Use of Links: Most agreements require that you use links exactly as provided
    without any modifications.
No Spam: All agreements prohibit the promotion of their site through
    the use of unsolicited email.

Maximizing Your Profits

Making money with affiliate programs isn't as simple as putting up banner ads and
expecting the checks to roll in. You'll need to do some work to get the maximum
payout from your affiliate programs. Here are some simple steps you can use to
make affiliate programs work for you:
Keep it Clean: Nothing turns visitors off faster than pages and pages
of banner ads. Most visitors will quickly click to another site if your
opening page is too "busy" or slow to download. As ClickQuick.com's
Ryan Adams puts it: "The number-one way [to get visitors to return] is
to offer a reason for those visitors to come back. If your site is on some
free web host, and is filled with 25 banner ads for affiliate programs
on the first page, your visitors have no reason to return. Matter of fact,
they will usually hit the Back button to leave before they click an
ad to go to an affiliate partner."

Use Text Links: Web users are becoming immune to banners and
will ignore them. But if you include links within an article or include a
text link and a description, visitors are more inclined to visit the referenced site.

Provide Related Content: Content is what brings users to your site and
what will keep them there. Take some time to develop relevant, actionable
articles that will provide your visitors with truly useful information rather than
simply regurgitating the same "old" material offered on similar sites.
A site offering garden supplies can engage visitors by offering zonal growing tips,
targeted industry news, frost warnings, and top-notch features and discussion pieces
-- as well as a forum area where members can post questions and discuss the topics in the articles.

Monitor Your Results and Adapt as Necessary: Take advantage of the
up-to-the-minute tracking offered by most affiliate programs. Check your results
often and make changes as necessary. If your banners aren't working, try text links. If your
hottest affiliate program is buried 3 levels into your site, move it to the front page and see
if your results improve. Refer-it.com's Affiliate Manager Shawn Collins has seen positive
results by moving ads around and featuring different products. Collins said, "We feature
different books on our homepage from time to time and whichever book we feature at a
given time tends to outsell the others which are only featured in our bookstore."

Take Advantage of Special Offers: Many sites run daily, weekly, or monthly
specials -- and provide related banners! For instance, MotherNature.Com recently
ran a promotion offering $20 off on a visitor's first purchase.

Increase Your Hits: Take steps to increase your hits through search
engine placement and newsletters; the more people visit your site,
the more people will visit your sponsors.

Future Trends

Affiliate programs are the wave of the future, according to some Internet experts.
A study by Forrester Research showed that on average, affiliates of top retailers
generate 13% of total online revenues and will increase to 21% by 2003.
According to Ryan Adams, "Affiliate programs will continue to evolve.
The concept is still fairly new, and the boundaries are still being tested. I think
in the near-term we will see more competition for quality affiliates.
This means higher commissions or special bonuses to attract and retain the top sites."
What changes might we see in the longer term? Adams thinks more programs will
move to help webmasters better integrate products and services for sale into their
content. "Banner ads are poor performers for referring product sales, so affiliate
programs will need to better teach their affiliates how to creatively integrate links,
and also provide additional tools to reduce the manual work
required in setting up and maintaining links."

Starting with a Bang

Building an online empire isn't an easy proposition. It takes hard work, products
you believe in, relevant content, excellent customer service, and repeat customers.
Carefully chosen affiliate programs can help build your online business

by providing a steady cash flow and bringing visitors back to your site.
And who knows, maybe one day you'll be successful enough to
sponsor an affiliate program of your own.

10 methods to Make Money from your Website or Blog

Making money online and monetizing your Website’s Traffic is generally neither as easy as it sounds nor as profitable as most people think. In many cases major changes in the philosophy of the service/website must be done (especially if the website used to offer free services) and several trade-offs must be made. As a result this can heavily affect the amount of traffic and users that you have.
This week, StayOnSearch’s 9th free lesson on Online Marketing is about making money online. At the beginning of the article Mark Thompson elaborates on the fact that in order to make money you need to develop a high traffic website and increase your loyal users. The author stresses that having multiple streams of income is very important in order to reduce risks. Additionally due to the fact that the audience of each industry has different characteristics, some of the above streams of revenue work better in some sectors or they don’t work at all in some others. Finding the correct mix/combination of the above streams can help you maximize your profit.
Below you will find a short description of the methods that you can use to monetize your blog or website along with a few comments that are not part of the original lesson. Nevertheless I strongly recommend you to sign up for the free Online Marketing lesson, where you can find a detailed description of each method, along with the recommended tools or services that you should use.

1. Write Product Reviews

Once you increase your Authority or once you become an influential professional of your industry, you can start writing product reviews for 3rd party products. The most important thing here is to promote only the products that you find useful, be transparent and honest.

2. Start an Affiliate Program

If you sell a particular product or service through your website, you can start an affiliate program with other webmasters and online marketers. Affiliate Programs work with commission, so depending on how many sales your collaborators generated, they get a cut from your profits. This method allows you to recruit a large number of marketers to promote your product without requiring a large initial capital. Nevertheless in order to be successful you must ensure that those people promote your products with white-hat techniques and they do not do actions that can hurt your brand name or product.

3. Join Affiliate Programs

Instead of starting an affiliate program of your own, you can join the affiliate program of another company and promote its products through your website. Depending on the sales that you generate for them, you get a percentage from their profits.

4. Google Adsense and other Advertising programs

As you all know there are lots of advertising programs such as Google Adsense that allow webmasters to earn money by placing ads in their sites. These advertisements generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis.

5. Sell Banner Ads and Ad Space

A similar method with the above, but instead of charging the advertisers on per click or per impression basis, you charge them with a fixed monthly fee. This method is usually used by high traffic blogs which have enough users/traffic.

6. Add a Job Board

Another way to make money from your website is to add a job board and post industry specific jobs. In this way you make money from every post that Job Recruiters publish. Have in mind that this is neither a very common and nor a very efficient stream of revenue due to the fact that Job Recruiters usually post their ads on High traffic career Websites or in social media networks like LinkedIn.

7. Create a Membership Section

This is one of the most difficult but also profitable methods. This method requires you to develop a community or service and build a membership section where paid users gain access on Premium Services or exclusive resources.

8. Create and Sell a Product

This method is very close to the above. You need to develop a tangible or intangible product and trade it on your website. Have in mind that you should sell something useful and that you must avoid promoting products that can hurt your reputation.

9. Newsletter Sponsors

That’s a typical method of E-mail Marketing. If you have a long list of emails from users that are willing to receive a newsletter, theoretically you can use it promote products and services. The longer the list the better for your income is.
At this point I must stress the fact that this form of marketing is considered spammy by a large part of users. Only if you are 100% sure that your subscribers will find the product or services useful you should send such emails. You are not only risking your reputation but also you risk in getting your domain black listed.

10. Consulting

As we said above, once you become an authority on your industry, you get the opportunity to work as a consultant for companies that read your blog, use your website and trust you as an expert. The exposure that you get from professional blogs is significant and as a result you can receive lots of request from companies that need your services.

Selecting the appropriate mix

As we said above it is crucial to test the methods that are aligned with your corporate philosophy and that are more likely to be successful on your industry. If you decide to collaborate with other companies by affiliation programs make sure that they are white-hat people and that they do not use extremely aggressive marketing techniques. Also if you decide to write reviews or promote other products be 100% sure that this is a reliable product. By promoting or recommending a low quality product you jeopardize your reputation and you risk your brand name.

What you should avoid

First of all as you will see in the lesson, the author mentions another method to make money which is to sell text links. The author stresses that this is a risky and gray-hat technique. My personal view is that this is a very risky way that simply does not worth it. If you do sell paid links, you affect the search engine results by passing Link Juice to your advertisers and there is a good chance to get banned from the major Search Engines because you violate their Terms of Use.
Another method that you probably need to avoid is spamming your subscribers with low quality products by using email campaigns. Lots of online marketers have destroyed their online reputation for using such practices. My personal view is that you should not use such methods, not only because of the reputation risks but also because of the legal implications of email spamming.
Finally my suggestion is to avoid aggressive marketing tactics that promise you easy and fast money. If you want to be successful online you must build your reputation piece by piece, prove that you are an expert on your industry and make people trust you by being honest and transparent.

28 Ways to Make Money with Your Website

There are several lists with “ways to make money with a website” on the Internet, but none of them seem to be complete. That is why I decided to create this one. If you know a method that is not listed below, just let us know and we’ll update it.

1. PPC Advertising Networks

Google AdSense is the most popular option under this category, but there are also others. Basically you need to sign up with the network and paste some code snippets on your website. The network will then serve contextual ads (either text or images) relevant to your website, and you will earn a certain amount of money for every click.

The profitability of PPC advertising depends on the general traffic levels of the website and, most importantly, on the click-through rate (CTR) and cost per click (CPC). The CTR depends on the design of the website. Ads placed abode the fold or blended with content, for instance, tend to get higher CTRs. The CPC, on the other hand, depends on the nice of the website. Mortgages, financial products and college education are examples of profitable niches (clicks worth a couple of dollars are not rare), while tech-related topics tend to receive a smaller CPC (sometimes as low as a couple of cents per click).

The source of the traffic can also affect the overall CTR rate. Organic traffic (the one that comes from search engines) tends to perform well because these visitors were already looking for something, and they tend to click on ads more often. Social media traffic, on the other hand, presents terribly low CTRs because these visitors are tech-savvy and they just ignore ads.

2. CPM Advertising Networks

CPM advertising networks behave pretty much as PPC networks, except that you get paid according to the number of impressions (i.e., page views) that the ads displayed on your site will generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions.

A blog that generates 100,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, therefore, will earn $100 monthly.

CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad and the format. The better the network, the higher the CPM rate (because they have access to more advertisers). The closer you put the ad to the top of the page, the higher the CPM. The bigger the format (in terms of pixels), the higher the CPM.

You can get as low as $0,10 and as high as $10 per 1,000 impressions (more in some special cases). CPM advertising tends to work well on websites with a high page views per visitor ratio (e.g., online forums, magazines and so on).

3. Direct Banner Advertising

Selling your own advertising space is one of the most lucrative monetization methods. First and foremost because it enables you to cut out the middleman commissions and to determine your own rates. The most popular banner formats on the web are the 728×90 leaderboard, the 120×600 skyscraper, the 300×250 rectangle and the 125×125 button.

The downside of direct banner advertising is that you need to have a big audience to get qualified advertisers, and you will need to spend time managing the sales process, the banners and the payments.

4. Text Link Ads

After Google declared that sites selling text links without the nofollow tag would be penalized, this monetization method became less popular.

Many website owners are still using text links to monetize their sites, though, some using the nofollow tag and some not.

The advantage of this method is that it is not intrusive. One can sell text links directly through his website or use specialized networks like Text-Link-Ads and Text-Link-Brokers to automate the process.

5. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is a very popular practice on the Internet. Under this system you have a merchant that is willing to let other people (the affiliates) sell directly or indirectly its products and services, in exchange for a commission. Sometimes this type of advertising is also called CPA (cost per action) or CPL (cost per lead) based.

Affiliates can send potential customers to the merchant using several tools, from banners to text links and product reviews.

In order to find suitable affiliate programs you can turn to individual companies and publishers like Dreamhost and SEOBook, or join affiliate marketplaces and networks.

6. Monetization Widgets

The latest trend on the web are widgets that let you monetize your website. Examples include Widgetbucks and SmartLinks. Some of these services operate under a PPC scheme, others behave like text link ads, others yet leverage affiliate links.

Their main differentiator, however, is the fact that they work as web widgets, making it easier for the user to plug and play the service on its website.

List of companies that provide monetization widgets:

7. Sponsored Reviews

PayPerPost pioneered this model, with much controversy on the beginning (related to the fact that they did not require disclosure on paid posts). Soon other companies followed, most notably Sponsored Reviews and ReviewMe, refining the process and expanding the paid blogging model.

Joining one of these sponsored reviews marketplaces will give you the opportunity to write sponsored posts on a wide range of topics. Not all bloggers are willing to get paid to write about a specific product or website (because it might compromise the editorial credibility), but the ones who do are making good money out of it.

If your blog has a big audience you could also offer sponsored reviews directly, cutting off the commissions of the middleman.

8. RSS Feed Ads

With the quick adoption of the RSS technology by millions of Internet users, website owners are starting to find ways to monetize this new content distribution channel.

Feedburber already has its own publisher network, and you can sign-up to start displaying CPM based advertising on your feed footer. Bidvertiser recently introduced a RSS feed ad option as well, with a PPC scheme.

Finally, some blogs are also opting to sell banners or sponsored messages on their feed directly. John Chow and Marketing Pilgrim are two examples.

9. Sponsors for Single Columns or Events

If you website has specific columns or events (e.g., a weekly podcast, an interview series, a monthly survey, a special project) you could find companies to sponsor them individually.

This method increases the monetization options for website owner, while giving advertisers the possibility to target a more specific audience and with a reduced commitment.

Mashable illustrates the case well. They have several advertising options on the site, including the possibility to sponsor specific columns and articles, including the “Daily Poll” and the “Web 2.0 Invites.”

Problogger also runs group writing projects occasionally, and before proceeding he publicly announce the project asking for sponsors.

10.Premium Content

Some websites and blogs give away part of their content for free, and charge for access to the premium content and exclusive tools.

SEOMoz is a good example. They have a very popular blog that gives advice and information on wide range of SEO related topics. On top of that visitors can decide to become premium members. It costs $48 monthly and it grants them access to guides, tools and other exclusive material.

11. Private Forums

While the Internet is populated with free forums, there is also the possibility to create a private one where members need to pay a single or recurring fee to join.

SEO Blackhat
charges $100 monthly from its members, and they have thousands of them. Obviously in order to charge such a price for a forum membership you need to provide real value for the members (e.g., secret techniques, tools, and so on).

Performancing also launched a private forum recently, focused on the networking aspect. It is called The Hive, and the monthly cost is $10.

These are just two examples. There are many possibilities to create a private and profitable forum, you just need to find an appealing angle that will make it worth for the members.

12. Job Boards

All the popular blogs are trying to leverage job boards to make some extra income. Guy Kawasaki, ReadWriteWeb, Problogger… you name it.

Needless to say that in order to create an active and profitable job board you need first to have a blog focused on a specific niche, and a decent amount traffic.

The advantage of this method is that it is passive. Once you have the structure in place, the job listings will come naturally, and you can charge anywhere from $10 up to $100 for each.

13. Marketplaces

Sitepoint is the online marketplace by excellence. Some websites and blogs, however, are trying to replicate that model on a smaller scale.

Depending on your niche, a market place that allows your visitors to buy, sell and trade products could work well. Over the time you could start charging a small fee for new product listings.

The problem with this method is that there are no standard software on the web, so you would need to hire a coder to get a marketplace integrated into your website.

You can see an example of a marketplaces being used on EasyWordpress and on Mashable.

14. Paid Surveys and Polls

There are services that will pay you money to run a small survey or poll on your website. The most popular one is called Vizu Answers.

Basically you need to sign up with them, and select the kind of polls that you want to run your site. Most of these services operate under a CPM model.

15. Selling or Renting Internal Pages

Million Dollar Wiki made this concept popular, but it was being used on the web for a long time around (check Pagerank10.co.uk for instance).

These websites sell for a single fee or rent for a recurring fee internal pages on their domain. Usually they have either high Pagerak or high traffic, so that people purchasing a page will be able to benefit in some way.

Implementing this method on a small blog would be difficult, but the concept is interesting and could be explored further.

16. Highlighted Posts from Sponsors

Techmeme probably pioneered this idea, but somehow it has not spread to other websites. The tech news aggregator displays editorial posts on the left column, and on the sidebar they have a section titled “Techmeme Sponsor Posts.”

On that section posts from the blog of the advertisers get highlighted, sending qualified traffic their way. Considering that the monthly cost for one spot is $5000 and that they have around 6 sponsors at any given time, it must be working well.

17. Donations

Placing a “Donate” link or button on a website can be an efficient way to earn money, especially if your blog is on a niche where readers learn and gain value from your content.

Personal development and productivity blogs, for instance, tend to perform well with donation based systems (one good example being Steve Pavlina).

A small variation of this method appeared sometime ago with the Buy Me a Beer plugin. This WordPress plugin enables you to insert a customized message at the bottom of each article, asking the readers to chip in for a beer or coffee.

18. In-text Adverting

In-text adverting networks like Kontera and Vibrant Media will place sponsored links inside your text. These links come with a double underline to differentiate them from normal links, and once the user rolls the mouse over the link the advertising will pop. Should the user click on it the site owner will make some money.

Some people make good money with this method, but others refrain from using it due to its intrusiveness. It is also interesting to note that very few mainstream websites have experimented with in-text advertising.

19. Pop-ups and Pop-unders

Pop-ups are a common yet annoying form of advertising on the Internet. If you are just trying to make a much money as possible from your website, you could experiment with them.

If you are trying to grow the traffic and generate loyal visitors, however, you probably should stay away from them. Just consider the hundreds of pop-up blockers out there: there is a reason why they are so popular.

20. Audio Ads

Also called PPP (Pay Per Play), this advertising method was introduce by Net Audio Ads. the concept is pretty simple: play a small audio advertising (usually 5 seconds) every time a visitor enters into your website. The user should not be able to stop it, creating a 100% conversion rate based on unique visitors.

The company is still rolling tests, but some users are reporting to get from a $4 to a $6 CPM. Regardless of the pay rate, though, this is a very intrusive form of advertising, so think twice before using it.

21. Selling the Website

Selling your website could be your last resource, but it has the potential to generate a big sum of money in a short period of time.

Market places on online forums like DigitalPoint and Sitepoint are always active with website buyers and sellers. Keep in mind that they most used parameter to determine the value of a website is the monthly revenue that it generates, multiplied by a certain number (the multiplier can be anything from 5 to 30, depending on the expectations of the seller, on the quality of the site, on the niche and other factors).

Some people also make money trading and flipping websites. They either create them from scratch or buy existing ones, and after some revamping they sell them for a profit.

22. Selling an Ebook

Perhaps one of the oldest money making strategies on the web, using a website to promote a related ebook is a very efficient way to generate revenue.

You could either structure the website around the book itself, like SEOBook.com, or launch the ebook based on the success of the website, like FreelanceSwitch did we the book How to be a Rockstar Freelancer.

23. Selling a Hardcover Book

Many authors and journalists leverage their blogs or websites to sell copies of hardcover books. Examples include Guy Kawasaki, Seth Godin and Malcolm Gladwell.

While most of these people were already renowned authors before they created their website, one could also follow the other way around. Lorelle VanFossen did exactly that with her Blogging Tips book. First she built her authority on the subject via her blog, and afterwards she published the book.

24. Selling Templates or WordPress Themes

As more and more people decide to get an online presence, website templates and WordPress themes become hotter and hotter.

On this segment you have mainstream websites like TemplateMonster, as well as individual designers who decide to promote and sell their work independently.

Brian Gardner and Unique Blog Designs are two examples of websites that make money with the sales of premium and custom WordPress themes.

25. Offering Consulting and Related Services

Depending on your niche, you could make money by offering consulting and related services. If you are also the author of your blog, the articles and information that you will share will build your profile and possibly certify your expertise on that niche, making it easier to gain customers.

Chris Garrett used a similar strategy. First he created a highly influential blog on the blogging and new media niche, and afterwards he started offering consulting services to clients with related problems and needs.

26. Creating an Email List or Newsletter

Email lists and newsletters represent one of the most powerful marketing and money making tools on the Internet. They offer incredible conversion rates, and the possibility to call people to action in a very efficient way.

Creating a big list is a difficult task though, so if you have a popular website you could leverage it to increase the number of subscribers on your list.

Yaro Starak is a famous Internet marketer, and if you visit his blog you will notice that right on top he has a section encouraging visitors to subscribe to his email newsletter. Yaro generates five figures in revenues each month from his email newsletters, proving that this method works.

27. Mentoring programs

People are willing to pay for someone or something that will teach them and give them knowledge (as opposed to mere information). Education is one of the biggest industries in the world, and the online landscape behaves in a similar way.

Creating a mentoring program related to the niche of your website could be very profitable if you manage to structure and promote it adequately. There is a wide range of media and tools that you can use to deliver the information, from text articles to audio and video lessons.

Brian Clark leveraged the success of Copyblogger to launch a mentoring program teaching people how to build membership and how to sell content online. The program is titled Teaching Sells, and it costs $97 monthly. Sounds expensive, but they have over 1,000 members.

28. Creating a conference around the website

If your website takes off and becomes an authority on its niche, you could create a conference around it. Depending on the size of your audience, the event could attract thousands of people, and you could make money directly from conference passes and sponsors.

Search Engine Land, for instance, created a series of conferences that visit several cities on the United States and on other countries as well. The conferences are called Search Marketing Expo, and the tickets and passes cost thousands of dollars.
